Cash register is an important part of retail business, and it comes with all kinds of variations: cash registers, cash register systems, POS systems and iPad cash registers etc. While many people may use those terms interchangeably, they’re not one and the same.
The official definition of cash register is a business machine that has a money drawer, indicates the amount of each sale, and records the amount of money received. It’s just used for cash receipt, not connected to a digital cash register system, and does not necessarily work with third-party equipment. It can be used independently without the need for a network, many samll grocery stores and stores use cash registers.
A POS system is the mechanism with which retailers and customers can execute purchases. It can consist of many different parts like touch screens, barcode scanners, card readers and receipt printers. This system requires special POS software to function. Many POS systems also put data in the cloud so they can track and sync data across multiple store locations, warehouses and fulfillment centers.
In this way, cash register seems to belong to the product of the previous era, and the POS system is more advanced. The same is true, you can see all kinds of touch screen POS systems everywhere in retailer, catering and other fields.
