A registered jack, referred to as RJ, is an ideal network interfacing platform that allows telecommunications connection for POS. There are several standards that the RJ comes with, and their naming depends on the wiring. Available RJs include RJ11, RJ14, RJ21, RJ48 and RJ45 etc, RJ12 and the RJ45 are the most common used registered jack across the POS system.
RJ12 is an upgrade version of RJ11, usually used to connect a cash drawer in a POS system. The RJ12 comes with 6 positions and 6 conductors, can also be used for phone line. The RJ12 mainly uses Cat3 or Cat 5 wiring. The difference is that RJ11 uses four internal wires (called conductors) while RJ12 uses six. RJ12 is backward compatible with RJ11, but RJ11 will not work with RJ12.
RJ45 is a common LAN interface used for POS systems and Ethernet connections. The RJ 45 connector on sale now is the 8 position and 8 connector modular connectors which can easily be wired to any pin out or even generic structured cabling system. Nowadays, POS systems mostly use RJ45 ports based on Gigabit controllers to ensure faster data transmission to the cloud.
