The Windows IoT (Internet of Things) LTSC (Long-term Service Channel) version is designed for devices that require stability, long-term support, and minimal updates, such as desktop commercial POS systems for payment transactions. While both Windows 11 IoT LTSC and Windows 10 IoT LTSC for desktop commercial POS systems follow these core principles, there are some key differences between them.
1. In terms of user interface and design, Windows 10 IoT LTSC adopts the classic Windows 10 interface, including the Start menu, taskbar, and traditional design elements. Windows 11 IoT LTSC introduces a modern user interface, including a centered Start menu, rounded corners, and a more simplified design. It also includes new animations and an updated touch-friendly interface.
2. There are also differences in system requirements. Windows 10 IoT LTSC is compatible with a variety of hardware, including older devices with lower specifications (such as 32-bit 1 GHz CPU, 1 GB RAM). Windows 11 IoT LTSC requires more advanced hardware, such as a 64-bit processor, 4 GB RAM, and TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module) support.
3. Windows 10 IoT LTSC is optimized for stability and reliability, with fewer updates and a focus on long-term use. Windows 11 IoT LTSC builds on the foundation, with improved performance optimization, better resource management, and support for newer hardware technologies (for example, DirectStorage for faster data access).
4. Windows 10 IoT LTSC supports traditional IoT applications and legacy software, but has poor compatibility with new technologies. Windows 11 IoT LTSC focuses more on seamless integration with the modern IoT ecosystem, including support for artificial intelligence, cloud platform interconnection, and modern connection interfaces.
5. In terms of security features, Windows 10 IoT LTSC has standard security features including Windows Defender and basic encryption tools. Windows 11 IoT LTSC enhances security with advanced features such as hardware-based isolation (TPM 2.0), secure boot, and improved malware protection, making it more resistant to modern cyber threats.
6. Update and support lifecycle is also a concern for everyone. Windows 10 IoT LTSC provides 10 years of support (5 years of mainstream support and 5 years of extended support). Windows 11 IoT LTSC provides 10 years of support with updated security patches and features tailored for modern IoT devices.
7. Windows 10 IoT LTSC currently uses older development tools and frameworks, which may require extra effort to adapt to modern IoT needs. Windows 11 IoT LTSC provides updated tools, including support for the latest .NET framework, Visual Studio updates, and enhanced APIs for IoT development.
