Many users have experienced this situation: a retail POS billing machine was working fine yesterday, but the next morning it suddenly fails to power on. The immediate assumption for many is that there’s a problem with the motherboard. However, in a recent case handled by Sunany, we found that the CPU failure was not caused by the POS motherboard itself, but rather by a chain reaction triggered by an external device leakage.
Upon inspection, we discovered that one of the external devices connected to the retail POS billing machine had a USB leakage or improper grounding. When such a leakage occurs, current can flow through the USB signal line into the motherboard, ultimately damaging the CPU and preventing the machine from starting. In fact, issues like this are more common in the POS industry than many realize.
POS systems, including retail POS billing machines, are typically connected to multiple peripheral devices such as receipt printers, barcode scanners, cash drawers, and customer displays. Some of these devices have their own independent power supply. If a device is poorly grounded or has power issues, it can send voltage surges back to the motherboard, potentially causing hardware failures.
To reduce the risk of motherboard or CPU damage, Sunany recommends users pay attention to the following points in daily operation:
1. Ensure all external devices—especially those with independent power supplies—are properly grounded.
2. Connect all cables before turning on the device to avoid voltage surges during power-up.
3. If an external device behaves abnormally, troubleshoot and resolve the issue before reconnecting it to the retail POS billing machine.
In many cases, the real threat to a POS machine does not come from the terminal itself, but from overlooked peripheral devices and power safety issues. A stable POS system depends not only on hardware performance but also on the safety and integrity of the entire device ecosystem. To ensure long-term reliable operation of a retail POS billing machine, users should always pay close attention to proper grounding and power safety.
