What is a Kitchen Display System (KDS)?

A Kitchen Display System (KDS) is a digital tool used to display orders in the back of a restaurant. KDS is usually linked to the restaurant POS system so that whenever a customer places an order, the order is automatically displayed on the screen monitored by the kitchen staff. Linking KDS to the restaurant POS system has the following features and benefits:

1. With KDS, orders can be sent directly from the front-of-house restaurant POS system to the kitchen’s display. It reduces the need for handwritten or printed tickets, reducing the risk of errors and miscommunication. It also simplifies the workflow of serving food, reduces the frequency of waiters entering the kitchen, prevents congestion, and ensures effective coordination between different kitchen areas.

2. KDS usually provides the ability to customize orders and accommodate special instructions, so that customers’ requirements such as replacement items and additional ingredients that may be required during the ordering process can be accurately communicated to kitchen staff.

3. The digital nature of KDS makes it possible to track order status in real time. Kitchen staff can mark orders as “in progress”, “ready for pickup” or “completed”, and waiters can clearly understand the status of the order to better serve customers.
